Embedding a Qualtrics Survey into a Canvas Course

Integrating Qualtrics surveys into Canvas can be done in a two step process.

  • Step 1: Preparing the link from Qualtrics
  • Step 2: Embedding the link into a Canvas course

For step 2, you have a couple of options for embedding the survey into your Canvas course. Them two options are detailed below with recommendations on when to use each

  1. Using HTML embedded code on a Page, Assignment, or Quiz
    1. This option allows you to embed the survey directly into a Page, Assignment, or Quiz
    2. This option is recommended if you do not want the student to leave Canvas to take the survey
    3. If the survey is added as an assignment or quiz you have the option to notify students who have not completed the survey. This is recommended if the response rate is important and you need a way to notify students who have not completed it.
  2. Adding as a Module item
    1. This option allows you to set prerequisites or requirements for completion if high response rate is needed
    2. This option will open into qualtrics directly when the student clicks the link

Preparing the Link

Whichever option you choose you first must obtain the distribution link for the survey:

  1. Log into http://uthscsa.co1.qualtrics.com/
  2. Navigate to your survey and click on Distributions

  1. Copy the link provided under the Anonymous Link or obtain a personal link

Option 1: HTML embed code (Pages, Assignments, Quizzes)

(In this example I’m using Pages)

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course and open/create the page you want the survey to exist on, click Edit
  2. Click on the HTML editor symbol

  1. Copy and Paste the following line into the editor

<iframe src="YourSurveyLinkWillGoHere" width=800 height=600></iframe>

  1. Replace the YourSurveyLinkWillGoHere text with the Qualtrics URL you created in the steps above
  2. Once saved, the survey is embedded onto the Page and should look as follows

Option 2: Adding as a module item

  1. Navigate to your Canvas course and select Modules > + Module
  2. Name your module

  1. Click on the + to add an item to your module > Select the tool where you embedded the survey
    1. Depending on your needs, you can selection either assignment or external url

Option 1: Assignment

Option 2: External URL

  1. To make it viewable to students you will need to make sure the module and item gets published

  1. Click on the three dots > Edit to set the requirements for the module item
